South Fork's anniversary yields summer of red, white and blue

Modified: Friday, May 18th, 2012

Residents sign the registry book and line up for Virgil Blevins' yummy pulled pork barbecue sandwiches and side dishes. South Fork's 20th anniversary celebration was held Saturday in conjunction with the town beautification day. Folks were busy all over town collecting trash, removing tree limbs and sprucing up the Visitor’s Center.

SOUTH FORK — 2012 is South Fork’s 20th Anniversary and it’s being celebrated all summer long. South Fork may not have a main street or town center, but it does have two highway corridors stretching several miles that create an opportunity to leave a lasting impression.

The goal is for every business in South Fork to have red, white and blue flowers and a large American flag flying at its entrance. The Greater South Fork Foundation, the South Fork Chamber and the Town of South Fork have partnered together with local grower La Garita Mountain Nursery to provide flowers and flags to the more than 80 businesses within the South Fork community. The cost is only $30 to each business.

For the fee, each business will receive a pre-grown flower pot filled with red, white and blue flowers to be placed at its entrance. The flowers have been ordered and grown specifically for this program, compliments of the Greater South Fork Foundation, the Chamber, and the town of South Fork. They will be ready for delivery the week of June 14, which is Flag Day.

Each business is responsible for the care and maintenance of the flowers during the summer, along with storage of the pots for next year’s program.

Contact the Visitor Center by Monday, May 21, to communicate your flag needs — if you need a flag with a pole, a flag without a pole, or choose to fly your own flag. A special thanks for the support of those who choose to fly their own flags and aid in keeping the costs down for this program.

Please make checks payable to the “Town of South Fork,” noting “Flag & Flowers” in the memo, and submit payment to the Visitor Center by Friday, June 7.  Expected delivery of flags and flowers is June 14, just in time for National Flag Day, so fly ‘em high and fly ‘em proud.
