SOUTH FORK — Two members of a Texas family were killed and another seriously injured in a crash at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 23.
The Colorado State Patrol responded to a one vehicle roll-over crash U.S. Highway 160, approximately four miles east of South Fork in Rio Grande County.
Paul Schweiger, 55, of Sugarland, Texas, was driving a 2002 Toyota 4-runner westbound on the highway and is believed to have fallen asleep. The vehicle traveled off the left side of the road and rolled 1 ˝ times, coming to rest on its top.
Mary Schweiger, 59, of Sugarland, was in the front passenger seat. She was transported to Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte and died on arrival. Gregory Warden, 29, Stafford, Texas, son-in-law of the Schweigers, was pronounced dead at the scene by Rio Grande County Deputy Coroner Todd Wright.
Audra Warden, 29, also of Stafford, was transported to the Rio Grande Hospital, treated and released.
Paul Schweiger was airlifted to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver in serious condition.
Alcohol usage and speed are not believed to have contributed to the crash.
The front seat occupants were wearing seatbelts and the airbags deployed. The Wardens, rear seat occupants, were not using seatbelts.
The crash remains under investigation.
