For some, H.O.P.E. is all they have

La Puente hosting a week of events, starting tonight

ALAMOSA — Each year, thousands of local community members find themselves homeless or on the brink of homelessness.  For nearly forty years, La Puente has existed to ensure that these vulnerable members of the community have the support they need to stabilize, heal, strengthen, and ultimately thrive.  In order to continue this support, La Puente will be hosting H.O.P.E Week (Homeless Outreach Prevention & Education) September 24-29. H.O.P.E. Week is a series of events meant to bring people together to learn about the realities of homeless in our community and to educate about the services La Puente offers to prevent homelessness and the supports available to those without a home.  The community is invited to attend the following events:

Wednesday, Sept. 25
Candlelight Vigil

All are welcome for a night of support for the homeless.  Starting at 6:30 p.m. at the La Puente Shelter, we will walk in solidarity, while trying to understand more about another way of life. The walk will wrap up at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a short service and a performance by 68 West. Refreshments to follow. Transportation will be provided back to the shelter after event.

Thursday, Sept. 26
VEGI Stone Soup

VEGI will be hosting Stone Soup for the Alamosa Elementary School Students. This event is a day of community-building, veggies and fun. We will be reading the children’s book Stone Soup and serving vegetable soup with fresh ingredients from our gardens from 9:15 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Alamosa Elementary School. Please email [email protected] if you would like to take part in some way. We still need a few volunteers to help with preparation leading up to the event.

Sunday, Sept. 29
Shelter Open House BBQ & Resource Fair
All are welcome for a community barbeque at the La Puente Shelter at 11:30 a.m. There will be a live band, face painting and fun activities. This is a chance to for the community to come together and enjoy an afternoon of music, food and fun! Health, housing and employment resources will also be available for guests.
