Staying mentally healthy during times of stress

SAN LUIS VALLEY- During this time of stress and the everchanging future of our communities, it is more important than ever to keep a healthy mindset and remind ourselves of the beauty that surrounds us and the hope for a better future. In light of these unprecedented times, it can be difficult to wade through the large amounts of information being poured forth from several different platforms including social media and news outlets. Here are some tips and resources available to people who may be struggling with the world today and how to keep a happy healthy home in the midst of stress.
Families across our Valley are finding themselves in difficult situations. Trying to feed children, complete home schooling, hold a steady job and understand what is happening in our communities can be a daunting task for many, but know that you are not alone and that there are several organizations and resources available to help when needed.
Rio Grande Social Service Director Jody Kern shared some tips for “Less Stress Parenting” which follows. Make sure to take time for yourself each and every day. Exercise, stretching, reading or taking a walk are some of the proven ways to reduce stress. If you are feeling overwhelmed, arrange for some outside help so you can manage all aspects of your life more effectively.
Keep your sense of humor when things don’t go as planned. A good laugh can heal the soul in times of stress. No one is a perfect parent or for that matter, a perfect child. Accept that children sometimes make mistakes. Children are inconsistent and act thoughtlessly; this is part of being a child. Count to 10 before you get angry and ease the tension with touch. Share a hug, hold hands, cuddle on the couch or give children a pat on the back.
Listen to your child and show you value your conversations. Good communication can prevent conflict and stress. Schedule family fun and fitness into your day. Laughter and physical activity are great stress reducers. Talk with friends about your parenting concerns. Sometimes you will find that others are dealing with the same issues you are, and it can be a wonderful feeling and make sure to share your joys of parenting with them as well. Continue to learn about child development and how your children mature. This can help you with your expectations for your child’s behavior and keep them realistic.
